Ga State Government
Alabama's State and Local Governments by David L. Martin, Why does politics rank right after football as Alabama's favorite sport? Auburn University political scientist David Martin's third edition of the 1975 classic, Alabama's State and Local Governments, provides a unique viewpoint in answer to this question. Martin, a well-known expert on how government works in Alabama, also lets the reader in on the answers to some other intriguing questions, such as ... Why do voters in Chilton County cast more than one vote each? Why does a municipal judge in Alabama have to be a lawyer, while a county probate judge does not? How much are the members of the Alabama Legislature paid? If you don't pay your Alabama state taxes, how will the Department of Revenue track you down? What questions does the State Ethics Commission complaint form ask? What prisons are located in Alabama and how long do inmates typically serve? Whether you are a public official, lobbyist, teacher, librarian, or citizen interested in politics, Martin's 288-page book offers the concise information you need on the state's governmental system. This volume is profusely illustrated, with dozens of charts and tables, and a detailed index, which allows you to find quickly answers to questions about Alabama government. A valuable resource for anyone interested in politics in the South, Alabama's State and Local Governments will be especially helpful to those who want to compare Alabama's state government to the governments of other southern states.
Global Governance and the United Nations System by Volker Rittberger, This book offers a wide ranging analysis of changing world order at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It examines the progression from international to global governance, focusing on the fundamental change of actors, agendas, collective decision making, and the role of the UN system. Globalization does not only mean a change of relationship between governments and market forces. It also has important implications for the identities and activities of transnational social actors. International governance, the authors argue, faces three different challenges: the technological revolution, globalization, and the end of the Cold War -- leading to jurisdictional, operational, incentive, and participatory gaps in governance with which international governance systems cannot adequately cope. In attempting to respond to these new problems, international governance systems have engaged in a multifaceted move toward global governance, reacting to these challenges in part by transforming themselves. The contributors of this volume discuss various aspects of this transformation, extrapolate its trends, and provide suggestions about possible forms of global governance. They address several key issues, such as the roles of states, intergovernmental organizations, the UN system, and non-state actors--market forces as well as civil society--in a future world order. Will they cooperate in global governance systems and, if so, how? To what extent will states still be able to attain their governance goals, providing security, protection, and social welfare? Are international institutions at the regional level more effective in providing security for the peoples of their respective regions? Theauthors also explore the changing nature and increasing salience of non-state actors such as NGOs and business corporations.

By ranging widely across education, criminal justice, welfare, political rhetoric, and civil law, Nolan convincingly illustrates how the private sector has begun to take over the work of government agencies, particularly in the early 1730s with James Oglethorpe, an Englishman in the American state, faced with a steady decline in public confidence, has embraced a therapeutic code of moral understanding to legitimize its very existence. In a tone refreshingly free of polemic, Nolan charts the dialectic relationship between government and citizenry.
